University teachers are becoming more and more aware that the lecture mode of delivery, while efficient, does not on its own lead to the most effective results. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to work with students in more interactive environments. For instance, at Quest University students take one course at a time, for 3½ weeks each — the “block plan” pioneered by Colorado College. Meeting the same group of students for three hours every day demands a variety of pedagogical...
Originally published in 1992, this 368-page workbook includes a plethora of classroom ready exercises and projects for students in differential equations courses. Using an approach which closely parallels what goes on in science and engineering laboratories, this workbook provides computer experiments that amplify topics found in introductory ordinary differential equations texts. Excellent 2 and 3-D graphics illustrate the range of qualitative behavior of solutions and give compelling visual...
In this article, I explain the history of using Interdisciplinary Lively Applications Projects (ILAPs) in an ordinary differential equations course. Students want to learn methods to "solve real world problems," and incorporating ILAPs into the syllabus has been an effective way to apply solution methods to situations that students may encounter in other disciplines. Feedback has been positive and will be shared. Examples of ILAPs currently used will be referenced. For more information about how...
